Climate Italys geographical position is right in the middle of a temperature zone but their climate varies Their climate varies because of the warm waters of the Mediterrian Sea and the Alpine Arc which blocks the clod winds coming from the north Futhermore the Atlantic Ocean causes wet atmospheric currents and Eastern Europe brings in dry and cold currents The Appenine chain deals with the wet winds from the Tyrrhenian causing climatic differences on opposite sides of the peninsula In the northern regions the differences in temperature between summer and winter are more marked than in the south and along the coasts Usually the temperatures in the Po plain remain around zero in January but in the Alpine valley the temperature can drop to around -20C and snow usually stays on the ground for a couple of weeks In the southern regions of Italy the average temperature for January is 10C except for the inland mountain zones Summertemperatures all over Italy usually rise to around 24-25C the temperature is lower in higher zones In Italy there are six climatic regions 1 Alpine Region- The alpine region has long cold winters and short cool summers There is more percipitation during the summer especially in the pre-alpine belt 2 Po Region- The Po region has cold and snowy winters and nice warm summers There is more percipitation during spring and fall but around the pre-alpine lakes there is heavy fog because the land is wet 3 Adriatic Region- The sea in the Adriatic region has little to no influence on the temperatures
