An Analysis of the Declaration of the Independence and Patrick Henry's Speech in the Virginia Convention

The Declaration of Independence and Patrick Henrys Speech in the Virginia Convention are both powerful arguments for American independence They both were written or spoken at the time when America was ready to break away from Great Britain Yet theses two documents differ greatly in many parts especially their format content and persuasive techniques The format of Patrick Henrys Speech in the Virginia Convention is a speech He delivered this speech at the Virginia Provincial Convention attempting to persuade the people to take up armed resistance against the British The Declaration of independence on the other hand is almost like a letter in its format Its purpose was to announce to the people of America their independence from Britain The content of these documents while appearing very much the same is also different Patrick Henry tries to persuade the people of America to arm themselves against Britain Meanwhile Thomas Jefferson attempts to inform the people that they should break away from the king who is referred to as a tyrant While Patrick Henry talks about Great Britain itself Jefferson targets in specifically on the king The persuasive techniques used by the two authors are also different Patrick Henry focuses on rhetorical questions restatement and repetition He uses these to make his audience think about what he is saying For example he asks them Why stand we here idle He wants them to think about what he is saying since he does not expect an answer from them Thomas Jefferson meanwhile focuses on parallelism This is the repeated use of phrases by Thomas Jefferson particularly He has This is meant to hit the reader in a staccato-like manner While these two documents might seem similar since they both try to convince the American people that they should declare their independence they are different in the stance that they take against Britain While Thomas Jefferson encourages a peaceful secession Patrick Henry suggests that they fight for
