June 17th 1789 The Third Estate Declares itself to be a National Assembly They invited the nobles and clergy to join them in this single-chambered legislature June 20th 1789 Tennis Court Oath declared In fear that they would be stopped the members of the National Assembly regrouped at a local indoor tennis court and swore not to break up until France had a new constitution July 14th 1789 Mob storms the Bastille in Paris The Bastille was a large fortress on the eastern edge of the city The storming of the Bastille marked that attempts at reform had become a full-blown revolution Faced with this revolt the monarchy backed down August 14th 1789 Nobles and clergy in the National Assembly give up their privileges out of fear The National Assembly announced the end of feudalism and of the Old Regime August 1789 Adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of Man This was a prologue to the new constitution that wasnt written yet It was a short to the point document guaranteeing basic personal rights such as property free speech and personal security 1791 Louis XVI accepts the constitution written by the National Assembly The new constitution was designed to prevent the return of tyranny by making all government officials subject to the rule of law It proclaimed France as a united self-governing kingdom broke up the entire system of royal administration and adopted a system of federalism that shifted authority from Paris to the local areas April 20th 1792 France declares war on Austria 1792 Napoleon promoted to Captain January 21st 1793 King Louis XVI is guillotined in Paris after being tried for treason against the new constitution October 1793 Reign of Terror begins led by Robespierre This started the elimination all whom Robespierre considered to be enemies of the Revolution both extremists and
