Endocrine disorders Anatomy Physiology Diabetes Mellitus is a pancreatic disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin Insulin is a hormone that helps the bodys tissues absorb glucose sugar so it can be used as source of energy Insulin is secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas which are contained in the islets of Langerhans This disease does not discriminate nor hinder a person from living a normal life in society In people with diabetes glucose levels build up in the blood and urine causing excessive urination thirst hunger and problems with fat and protein metabolism Additional symptoms may include blurred vision dramatic weight loss irritability weakness fatigue nausea and vomiting Diabetes mellitus may also cause loss of feeling especially in the lower legs No mental problems have been detected and it does not lower a persons survival rate radically There are two types of diabetes mellitus Noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus The cause of Noninsulin-dependent type is the most common form yet in most patients the cause is unknown although it tends to be heredity Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus requires injections of insulin to stay alive Treatment consists of controlling the amount of glucose in the blood and preventing complications Depending on the type of diabetes this can be accomplished through regular physical exercise a carefully controlled diet and medication refer to chart on following pages Diabetes Insipidus is a rare disorder resulting in excessive thirst and excessive passage of urine involving a hormone deficiency in the pituitary gland situated at the base of the brain The cause of the disease is the deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone which is normally secreted by the pituitary gland Again this disease does not discriminate and a person with this disease can live a relatively normal life in society Some of the signs and symptoms are an excessive thirst that is difficult to satisfy dry hands passage of large
