The essay Classroom Cheating a Serious Problem by William Rasberry tells the story of a college professors experience in discussing academic dishonesty with his students He noted a study that claimed that some 80 of the highest rated high school graduates had engaged in cheating and furthermore thought it was a typical practice This study moved Rasberry to carry out a discussion in his own classroom at Duke University His students claim to have outgrown the practice of academic dishonesty since entering college In order to better understand why this article was written one must know who the article was intended for and what he wants his audience to know In the paragraphs that follow I will give my view on who Mr Rasberry was trying to reach and why he was trying to reach them This essay was written in November of 1999 for the Washington Post Knowing this we become aware that the target audience for this article must be a reader of the Washington Post I must therefore ask who reads this newspaper I can only assume that the Washington Post is no different than any major newspaper and is read almost exclusively by adults The type of language used in this article also indicates that the intended reader has at least a good vocabulary Given the subject matter of the article I would say that he was targeting adults who either have children in school or work with children in a school Why did Mr Rasberry write this essay He must have had a specific purpose in mind Was he trying to convince his audience of something or was he simply trying to bring something to their attention Perhaps he was trying to motivate his audience into action I think he was trying to show his audience how widespread the problem of academic dishonesty is I believe he wanted people to realize that even the academic elite from
