The Hebrews Evolving Concepts of the Divine Its safe to assume the world is flat isnt it When I go to the ocean and look out my sense of sight relays to the rational part of my mind that there is a straight line out there That not too far away there is an edge that I would no doubt fall off of if I were to sail too far This is not too unlike how the early Hebrews came to some of their conceptions of God They didnt have a lot of insight on what may actually be taking place around them other than what their senses could help them conclude Take for example the quote from Psalm 1813-15 The Lord thundered from the Heavens the voice from the most high renounced He shot his arrows and scattered the enemies and great bolts of lightening routed them God seems to be described as a warlike god in this quote David imagines him coming down from the Heavens and helping him in battle This begins to shine some light on how the Hebrew people lived their lives around 1200 BC It is evident that the Hebrews were a warlike people who thought it reasonable to convey that their god would act in much the same manner as them A bit later in Deuteronomy I found the quote from 3239-41 to bring some insight to how the Hebrews were beginning to evolve The quote is as follows See now that I myself am He There is no good besides me I put to death and I bring to life I have wounded and I will heal and no one can deliver out of my hand I lift my hand to the Heaven and declare as surely as I live forever when I sharpen my flashing sword and my hands grasp it in judgment I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those
