The External Policies of the US -Savas Manoussakis Throughout modern history one country has been dominating the political economic and military spectrums of international politics This nation is none other than the United States of America Partly through the illegal takeover of Native American lands and resources and the exploitation of African slaves the US rose to become an economic and consequently a political and military global power This power was used to manipulate affairs outside of the United States with the somewhat arrogant justification of the US being the only true democracy and therefore any enemy of the US was also an enemy of democracy and all aspects accompanied by it such as human rights etc This belief in moral superiority of American self-judgment has its roots in the puritanical age and the ideal of a city on a hill as well as during the 18th century westward expansion and the doctrine of Americas manifest destiny As the US constantly claims it is the worlds greatest democracy and the greatest protector of it as well This claims are based mostly on the USs role in World War II and in the cold War I personally believe the US was not concerned in either of the two conflicts with the protection of democracy but more importantly in the protection of national interest Had the US not been drawn into World War II by the Japanese I think it would have continued its isolationist policy And although there is no doubt that the US paid a high price during the war the gains were proportionally higher than any other countrys becoming a super-power and having all of the western world under its influence This was also the case with the Soviet Union but the Soviet Union suffered far greater losses than the US during the Second World War The cold war also shows how the US was not concerned with cultivating and ensuring democracy but
