This fictional novel is based on the true story of Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst also known as One-Eyed Charley cockeyed charley and six-horse Charley She was born in some part of New Hampshire in 1812 and lived in an Orphanage or poorhouses after her parents were killed after being thrown from a carage during a terrible storm While at the orphanage she met a man whos name was Vern He was a runaway slave and was now working at the orphanage as a horse trainer and caretaker She also made a friend named Hayward Hes a boy about 8-10 years old Hes adopted half way through the book so hes not talked about a whole lot Because Hayward is adopted charlotte decides to runaway because she is the only girl and she is tired of being Mrs Boyles slave Mrs Boyles is the cook and makes charlotte her personal slave to the kitchen So she ran away and caught a stage to Massachusetts on the way Charlotte fell asleep between two women She was not awakened and was left in the stage She awoke in the middle of the night and found a hayloft and fell back asleep She was awaken by the clatter of bridles as she awoke she saw a man with a pitchfork in her face He demanded who she was and where she came from She said she was from out of town and was looking for a job The mans name was Ebeneezer Balch Charlotte asked him for a job He said that he had no place for her and she begged and pleaded with him He finely aloud her to stay and work with the horses and keep the stalls She worked for Mr Balch for a while After that while had passed he told her that he was planning to move his business to Rode Island and wouldnt be needing her after
