FRQ For the first time in American History the President was the leading radical reformer and man of the people Teddy Roosevelt make Andrew Jackson look like an Old World aristocrat With such a prolific man leading their party it is no wonder the reform movement of the Progressives was so successful and in fact was viable as a reform movement from 1900 through 1925 The three places that they made the most headway in were social economics and political fields In those fields the progressives looked to help out the common man and make the elite few pay their dues to society Under the shepherding of Roosevelt the Progressives made great headway on social issues of the nation The first way that they reformed the workplace was giving the workers more rights by backing labor unions A key example of this is in the Anthracite Coal Strike in 1902 where instead of using the National Guard to put down the union Roosevelt used it to threaten the owners to comply with the unions demands This shows a turn from a big business friendly government under McKinley and moving toward helping out the workers and the common man in general From this incident the deep canyon between labor and corporations was seen and the Department of Commerce and Labor was formed in 1903 This department successfully appeased the workers with a way to keep the government in business to keep everything fair for the workers But the progressives didnt stop there in trying to make the workplace better they gave women special rights in the workplace with the verdict in the Muller v Oregon case they gave seaman better conditions in the La Follette Seamans act they gave workmans compensation to workers in 1916 and in Lochner v New York they gave bakers a 10 hour work day So one can see that the progressive movement was in fact a valid reform movement in the
