The Necklace Desirees Baby and The Cask of Amontillado Many stories have great endings but the stories that lead you to believe and think that the character is a certain way and then all of a sudden the reader is approached with a surprise towards the end of the story fascinates the story with suspense and irony In the stories The Necklace and Desirees Baby as well as Cask of Amontillado have their own unique ways of twisting the charters feelings and position Each story is surrounded with ironic events and the irony of the each story also takes the readers by surprise and opens new doors wondering why each character changed and what other aspects related to that change In the story The Necklace Madame Mathilde was charming and beautiful A woman who lived a simple life but a life that was not to her higher expectations and satisfaction She had no dowry no expectations no means of being known understood loved wedded by any rich and distinguished man and she let herself be married to a little clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction 38 Even though she lived a simply life she wanted more than she can afford Madame Mathilde desired materialistic and superficial things in life and believed that this would make her happy She suffered ceaselessly feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries 38 Madame Mathilde and her husband were invited to ball Her husband bought a beautiful dress for her even thought he could not afford it yet she found herself not glamorous enough to fit the occasion unless she was wearing a jewel So Madame Mathilde borrowed a beautiful diamond necklace from her good friend Madame Forestier When she put the necklace on around her graceful long slender neck she now felt pricey with complete satisfaction She had a wonderful time at the ball and flaunted her self through out
