The 20th century was a time of great struggles it was a time of great battles it was a time of great authors One of the most influential and profound authors of that time period is a war veteran named Ernest Hemingway Hemingway gains fame by his unique method and style of writing he exploits his themes and symbols with precise syntax and diction He aims to eliminate everything in his novels that is unnecessary such as adverbs and adjectives Hemingway constantly uses symbols to demonstrate his themes as well as conflicts throughout his novels He often creates a theme on a code hero a Hemingway hero who must display grace under pressure in order to become a man he often produced a directionless generation that disregards all conventional values as a result of war As an author Ernest Hemingway is recognizable but his novels are unmistakable due to the distinguishable context of his books The element of writing that separates Hemingway from mediocrity is his unique style of writing Hemingways style is simple direct and unadorned which is most likely a refection of his newspaper writing He evades using adjective and adverbs whenever possible and places a great deal of emphasis on nouns because he prefers the concrete versus the abstract His unique style of precise diction aims toward the active reader because he avoids prolonging an idea with useless detail he seeks for his point or idea to be discovered and then lets the reader put the pieces of the puzzle together and proceeds with the story He uses exact detail to foreshadow upcoming conflicts as well as paint a vivid picture of the setting in the mind of the reader When there is a hurricane then the signs are revealed in the sky days ahead Old Man in the Sea 61 Hemingway demonstrates his use of nouns to reveal a dangerous mood he eludes using adjectives to describe
