Initial Fear Harkers Imagination or Draculas Intent When Johnathan Harker arrives at Castle Dracula he becomes increasingly fearful Many observations lead to his initial apprehension including the gloomy view of the castle the strength of the driver and Dracula himself his hosts cold touch and Draculas peculiar welcoming These observations are no coincidence Dracula in an attempt to test Harkers disposition and to better understand how Harker will react to his actions set in motion a plan of events intended to instill and then revoke fear and a sense of inferiority In the opening sentence of chapter two Harker remarks I must have been asleep for certainly if I had been fully awake I must have noticed the approach of such a remarkable placeDracula 14 It is as if the castle appeared out of thin air Harker now has no idea how he exactly got there which would pose a problem if had to escape Harker also reveals that it perhaps seemed bigger than it really isDracula 14 The sense of fear can often allow our imaginations to get the best of us and make usually harmless objects seem threatening This is the first instance that we as readers begin to see Harkers fear The fact that Harker only sees the castle at night also makes the castle seem threatening This evil persona can only be perceived at night and is quite possibly the reason the driver stalled their arrival at the castle The strength of the driver and Dracula who we ultimately conclude are the same person also instills fear into Harker Harker states that the drivers hand was like a steel vice Dracula 14 that could have crushed his if it had wanted to And after being greeted by Dracula he says that his hosts strength made him wince Dracula 15 We can conclude that Dracula intends for Harker to notice his strength since he the driver and himself deliberately invites physical
