The Harmful Effects Of Marijuana Marijuana is one of the most harmful drugs but yet its one of the most frequently used drugs does that sound right Last year in the United States nearly 69 million people over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once The scary thing is do they really know about the harmful effects There are both long-term and immediate effects such as cancera huge killer in the world increased heart rate and the way young people grow up It is not yet determined whether marijuana leads to cancer but most people who smoke marijuana also smoke cigarettes and other drugs The smoke from marijuana contains similar cancer-causing compounds as tobacco but sometimes in higher concentrations From an article that I read I found an interesting study that shows someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer- causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day That really blew my mind From smoking marijuana it could contribute to early development of head and neck cancer in some people If thats not enough to scare people then what will Just like tobacco smoke marijuana smoke is harmful to the lungs because users often inhale the filtered smoke deeply and hold it in their lungs as long as possible The tars from marijuana smoke produce tumors when used for a long period of time With long-term effects there is also immediate effects such as faster heartbeat and pulse rate bloodshot eyes and dry mouth and throat Studies of marijuanas mental effects show that the drug can impair or reduce short-term memory alter sense of time and reduce the ability to do things which require concentration swift reactions and coordination such as driving a car or operating machinery
