Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project is a scientific effort to map all of the 100000 genes on 23 human chromosomes It is also to sequence the three billion DNA base pairs that make up these genes The project began in 1990 and centered in the Unites States and France It is based on the understandance of genetic diseases such as muscular dystrophy and Alzheimers disease It also helps gain insight on human evolution The project is fifteen years and three billion dollars worth The project had focused efforts on the most important initial objectives Progress ended up being more rapid than planned and the project was updated It extended initial goals and scope of genome research Recently in 1998 another NIH-DOE five-year plan was developed to cover completion of the original objectives of sequencing the human genome and to expand the HGP study of genetic variation and functional analysis of the genome In the United States the Department of Energy DOE was the main research agency Shortly hereafter the National Institutes of Health NIH also became one of the main research agencies Both the DOE and NIH were responsible for developing and planning the project The two agencies soon were working together and had a relationship established by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate research and technical activities related to the human genome The National Human Genome Research Institute was established in 1989 as the National Center for Human Genome Research The mission was to head the Human Genome Project for Duncan 2 The National Institutes of Health NHGRI is one of 24 institutes centers or divisions that make up the NIH the federal governments primary agency for the support of biomedical research NIHs components collectively make up the worlds largest biomedical research facility The Human Genome Project is still in progress and has a goal to be reached by 2005 They want to be able to
