Question 1 The word identity is complicated because theirs is no one definition that define it Sociologist and Psychologists defines it in relation to their area of interest To me as a psychology student the word identity refers to the capacity for self reflection and the awareness of self Johnson 1986 defines it as an umbrella term used throughout the social sciences for an individuals comprehension of him or herself as a discrete separate entity In sociology the notion of identity is individuals labeling of themselves as member of particular groups such as nation social class subculture gender and so forth Question 2 Social construction of identity can be defined as a process where individuals construct their identity As stated Giddens 2001 Human infants are born without any identity They must be transformed by their parents teachers and others into cultural and socially adept animals The general process of acquiring identity is referred to as socialization Socialization is important in the process of personality formation While much of human personality is the result of our genes the socialization process can mold it in particular directions by encouraging specific beliefs and attitudes as well as selectively providing experiences Question 3 A society is a self-perpetuating grouping of individuals occupying a particular territory which may have its own distinctive culture and institutions Society can also be defined as a group of people that form a semi-closed social system in which most interactions are with other individuals belonging to the group Society can also refer network of relationship between social entities Giddens 2001 Reference list Giddens A 2001 Sociology 4th ed Cambridge Polity press
