In Book 1 of The Iliad the author Homer deliberately introduces Achilles and Agamemnon fighting over the return of Chryseis Agamemnons prize During the summit Agamemnon threatens to take Achilles prize after Achilles tried to pacify him Agamemnon also flaunts his power overtly thinking he can do anything he wants because he is king Achilles feels degraded and is tempted to kill Agamemnon but condone when the goddess Athena impedes him In this sense Achilles is a better man and clearly the victor of the heated argument in which Agamemnon let his emotions overpower logic Judging from Agamemnons choice of words throughout his speeches he is unreasonable and childish when making decisions When the seer named Calchas explains the reason for Apollos anger at the Argives and the only way to mollify Apollo is to return Chryseis Agamemnon is infuriated From his perspective it is inequitable that he is the only one to lose his war booty He stipulates another prize of equal value from his fellow Argives or he will procure one of his allies prizes Furthermore Agamemnon articulates that he does not need Achilles and that there are other warriors willing to fight for him He also takes Briseis saying you can learn just how much greater I am than you and the next man up may shrink from matching words with me from hoping to rival Agamemnon strength for strength 1219-221 He decides to take Achilles prize as a paradigm to others that those who oppose the king will be punished unaware of how immature he is Agamemnon does not desist to contemplate the laudable achievements Achilles has done for him and the consequences of losing his best warrior His actions completely contradict those of Achilles When Achilles is confronted by Agamemnons invective he lashes back at him like any other prideful warrior would Although both men are easily driven by resentment Achilles has control over his emotion unlike
