On Tuesday September 11 global terrorism struck in the homeland and at the headquarters of globalization therefore allowing hyper-terrorism to lay bare the vulnerability of hyper-power The targets were the symbols of economic vitality and the citadel of freedom The split-screen TV images--the World Trade Center alongside the Pentagon with rolling news headlines along the bottom of the screen--are a metaphor for the dividing split in history the age of innocence before and the world of postmodern terror after In their innocence Americans embraced the illusion of security behind a supposedly impregnable line of continental defense Undoubtedly the US had previously suffered acts of terror but none so devastating so utterly disastrous as to provoke a daily fear a constant second glance over the shoulder However that fear and this single incident that brought the free world together is an everyday reality it is a way of life that is accepted as commonplace for so many people from many other countries over the past few decades But no one anywhere has suffered terrorist carnage on such a devastating mind-numbing scale as America on September 11 2001--Black Tuesday This must be the worst day of casualties suffered by Americans on a single day in peace or in war Like the two world wars the war on terrorism is a war from which America can neither stay disengaged nor win on its own nor will it be won without full US engagement and support America has been the most generous nation in the world in responding to emergencies and crises the world over--the helping hand and the pillar of humanitarian aid Now that the attack has happened on American soil Americans should be heartened by the spontaneous warm and overwhelming response from everyone else--in the words of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder immediately following the attacks roughly translated These attacks are an attack on us allOn the entire free world Today we are all Americans The
