Set during the height of the cold war in the 60s K-19 The Widowmaker is loosely based on the real story of the Russian nuclear sub of the same name Harrison Ford plays the subs Captain Alexei Vostrikov and Liam Neeson is the boats executive officer Mikail Polenin Both Vostrikov and Neeson are strongly loyal to Mother Russia however the XO doesnt quite agree with the way that the Captain pushes the boat and its crew As the sub heads into American waters they discover that its nuclear reactor is leaking So now the young crew must face death as they rush to repair their crippled boat while the clock is ticking K-19 borrows a lot from previous submarine films most notably Das Boot There are several shots in the movie that are an obvious homage to that German epic such as the camera following the crew as they rush through the round doors on the boat However the story here is just gripping enough to keep one interested until the end Once the boat is launched just about the entire movie takes place inside the sub so one can be drawn right into the crisis Its not until later in the film that we see daylight but even then the focus is kept on the sub and its crew which amplifies some of the events later in the film
