Every person has exclusive things they do that help create who he or she is Without these things people would not know the reason of their existence Throughout the Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro the main character Del Jordan grows from a young curious child into a mature woman The maturation process is a painful one as Del grows and attempts to define herself through her relationships with men She loses focus of her independence and begins letting others create who she is When she grows and matures she abandons the destructive path she is on and learns she must get her identity back by focusing on her intelligence and beauty Dels learns who she is through the experience of losing her sense of self when she begins to depend on a man for happiness She also learns part of her identity through exploring the physical side of relationships and realizing that is not who she is She loses all her confidence when men see her naked but has lost so much self-esteem she cannot leave the men to find her old self Growing older Del finally realizes that she has to give up the careless person she has become to find her true identity of having one of the highest averages in school To start off Del first learns she does not know who she is when she loses her sense of self because she began to depend on a man for her happiness Art Chamberlain who works at the local radio station is Dels first boyfriend Del being inexperienced with relationships can only go off of her gut feeling with situations When Del finds herself being secretly touched in inappropriate ways by Chamberlain while others are present Del thinks of this as a signal of impertinent violation so authoritative clean of sentiment Munro 177 Throughout the relationship Del makes herself vulnerable by allowing Chamberlain to take advantage of her
