F Scott Fitzgerald composer of the text The great Gatsby uses one of the main characters Jay Gatsby to provide the viewer with a more defined insightful and descriptive perspective on the American dream The responder slowly views an unravellment of the American dream through Gatsbys footsteps Gatsbys dream is only half fulfilled The American dream composes of two parts material and spiritual fulfillment Gatsby has only achieved half of the dream the materialistic part the spiritual part was not achieved thus Gatsbys dream and the American dream was not achieved There is a vast range of symbolism found present probably the most outstanding is the green light This symbol reflects the longing and desire to achieve the American dream Gatsby had achieved basically everything in the materialistic aspect of the American dream Gatsby has worked his way up the wealth and status chain from poverty to a millionaire He was so hard up he had to keep on wearing his uniform because he couldnt buy some regular clothes Gatsby was destined to improve his life as from a child he was always attempting to improve himself Jimmy was bound to get ahead He always had some resolves like this or something Do you notice what hes got about improving his mind He was always great for that He told me I et like a hog once and I beat him for it The society revolved around money materialism and leisure This is due to the post war atmosphere the society become greedier The illegal activity of bootlegging shows to the reader that Gatsby among others would resort to illegal activity to become rich They wanted materialistic things a good symbol of this are cars Rich cream colour bright with nickel swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and super boxes and tool boxes and terraced with a labyrinth of windshields that mirrored a dozen suns Gatsby possessed
