In the film The Seventh Seal there is a recurring theme with the characters Death and the Knight Antonius Block The two characters playing chess together is a Leitmotif in this film In the first scene of the film the knight Antonius Block challenges Death to a chess game After the first initial chess game on the beach the squire and the knight begin their journey to the Knights castle The chess game symbolizes life and more time for the knight to complete his last wishes Every time the knight and death sit down to play chess a new challenge or conflict comes about for the knight Each time the chess game is played by the knight and death the story moves on to its conclusionThe second time we see death and the knight together is in the chapel The knight is confessing to whom he thinks is a priest but actually it is death pretending to be a priest Death tricks the knight into giving up his chess strategy In the scene at the chapel the chess game is just mentioned to remind the audience that the game will continue on further in the storyEach time that death and the knight play chess together the knight must accomplish another task before the chess match is over The chess game is a motif to move the narrative along towards the resolution The third time we see the knight and death playing chess is after the chapel Antonius then recognizes Jof and his family as of great value an oasis of goodness and innocence in a desert of selfishness and guilt When he leaves them at the end of sequence to continue his game he concludes from a seemingly casual remark made by Death that they are threatened It is in the forest that this veiled danger seems to become realThe final scene with knight and death playing chess is in the woods Jof is able
