There are many influences that have contributed to the growing changes in costumes and dress throughout history Why do people dress the way they do and what are the motivating and inspirational meanings behind them Many of these changes center around personal preferences based on the color size shape comfort and the designers concept of the idea But sex appeal and regional location have been some of the more predominant attractions to the actual portrayal of the outfit that is worn in order to achieve the best possible audience attraction People dress for many reasons and occasions and each of these reasons directly reflects the designer and wearers intentions Political status current events religious belief mood feeling social stature wealth sex age geographic region intended activity social acceptance and various other influences contribute to the vast differences in costume and clothing design In costuming the preference usually follows a specific period of time or motif centered around the performance while personal dress branches off into varying degrees of life and the experiences that occur This vast array of influences has led to a wealth of variations in clothing that continue to distinguish the wealthy and famous from the common citizen In all societies the fear of social acceptance and rejection guide people to dress in a manner which best suits their personal preferences and attitudes Very often the clothing fear is almost totally unconscious the possessor has no realization that their actions are being ruled by it Hurlock p 41 These fears of acceptance and rejection are primarily centered on youth due to the fact that they are more readily acceptable of change and have a yearning to gain the acceptance of friends and peers but also encompass the entire population of any society The social factor is evident in the every day dress of society including the types of suits that business people wear uniforms that athletes compete in evening
