These days its hard to come across a good war film without being submitted to pools of blood and flying limbs Thats why in order to get your hands on a copy of Gallipoli youre going to have to make your way through the cobwebs and dust all the way back to 1981 Gallipoli Just short of perfection as long as youre not expecting facts Two Words Classic Propaganda Although it is appropriately used without it the movie would be a depthless emotionless factual documentary Thank goodness for the talented writer and director Peter Weirs ability to stretch the truth In the sprit of true classic 80s movie style this movie delivers the goods The storyline focuses on the developing friendship between the two leads Involving you in their lives to give greater passion to their fates Mel Gibson shines in one of his earliest but renowned roles as the witty and good-hearted Frank Dunne and the wonderfully cast Mark Lee radiates as Archie Hamilton the fun-loving naive boy from the bush The two meet as competitors on a racetrack Rivalry and friendship end up a great combination as they decide to join together They travel through the vast Australian outback in order to reach Perth and plan to go their own separate ways upon arrival They crack jokes They play pranks They seem detached from the reality of the war they are about to enter In one of lifes cruel ironies the sprinters try and join the 3rd Light Horse Brigade and end up in a battle where horses have no part to play The Men are used as infantry for the charge against the Turk Position And needless to say if you are into the movie up until that point you will be hanging on to every moment You will marvel at the cold hearted British officers and will question how this organised murder was allowed to happen
