OEDIPUS HAMLET Hamlet had the Oedipus complex Oedipus was a person who was cursed to kill his father and marry his mother So the Oedipus complex is when a child lusts after his or her mother This leads to depression because the child cannot fulfill his or her desire If Hamlet had the Oedipus complex then we can understand why he did some of the things that he did He delayed himself in killing Claudius because he could sympathize with him he suffered from depression because he could not be with his mother and Hamlet finally killed Claudius his mother had died Why did Hamlet take so long to kill Claudius He had a problem and the only way to fix it was to kill his uncle A lot of lives would have been saved including his own if Hamlet would have killed him earlier So why did he not Hamlet loved his mother and there is no possible way he could stand putting her through that much trauma So then he delayed the act as much as possible causing more involvement from other people than desired Hamlet also seemed to be depressed throughout the play What could be the cause of these low points in his life Underlying all of the reasons for him to become depressed is a deep-seated emotion or feeling of some sort In Act 3 Scene 4 Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius Now before Hamlet killed Polonius he was berating his mother for helping Claudius plot King Hamlets death Hamlet shows remorse when the body is revealed but then goes back to arguing with his mother Why would Hamlet feel remorseful He felt remorse because he had just made a fatal mistake in front of his mother If Hamlet wants to be with his mother then this is exactly what you cannot do Hamlet knows this which is why he feels remorse At the end of Act 5 Hamlet finally
