In the poem Poem for breast by Sharon Olds she speaks of her own breast as if they had life and a sense of awareness Sharon Olds uses personification allusion and metaphors to convey these thoughts She considers her breasts to have feelings although truly the feelings are her own She also states that although breasts dont make a woman they play an important role of their life I was alive so long without them I cant say I am them though their feelings are almost mine She also insinuates that breast give her an advantage over boys They were a gift to her and a gift for her to give Using personification allows her to show how her breasts are a living extension of herself She describes them as identical twins and how identical can be technical Most readers can relate to the idea of twins and although twins are very much alike as years go by twins tend to differ in noticeable ways She explains how just like children they cause her grief This can be understood by many women the strain on their backs nursing and proper care for them Sometimes now I hold them a moment One in each hand twin windows Heavy with grief They were a gift to me and then they were ours like little nurslings of excitement and plenty She refers to them as dumb with no language or knowledge of death but is comforted by their company By doing so she gives them a sense of innocence adding to the child like personality she sees in twins
