The Portrayal of Women -- Intro to literature Ms Halmi 50101 Women are portrayed in many ways during the times of William Shakespeare Even though they are said to be many other things they are broken up into two titles active and passive The women who are label as being active are those who play a role in the things that went on in the play They usually have some kind of say in what goes on and what dont The women who were considered passive are the ones who look upon the men in the play for some kind of authority They dont speak unless they are spoken to and their opinions are not usually accountable In Hamlet women were portrayed as having a passive role For instance Gertrude Queen of Denmark and the mother of Hamlet had no say over anything that went on in Denmark As the Queen she was not allowed to make any judgments the ruling man was the one who made the decisions without Gertrude opinion For an example Sweet Gertrude leave us two for we have closely sent for Hamlet hither said Claudius Hamlet 681 Gertrude never even questioned why the king sent her away before anyone else she just went on about her business She reacted to the king in the same manner in other situations When it came to speaking the king always spoke first unless it was an incident where someone directed a question to Gertrude first One good example of these actions was when the king and queen spoke to Rosencrantx and Guildenstern The king opened up by welcoming them and complimenting them Then the queen followed up after him and
