Genetic Engineering Genetic Engineering is the scientific alteration of genes or genetic material to produce desirable new traits in organisms or to eliminate undesirable ones Genetic engineering is an umbrella term which can cover a wide range of ways of changing the genetic material in a living organism The cells of all living organisms contain genes By changing an organisms genes scientists can give the organism and its descendants different traits Defects of individual genes can cause a malfunction in the metabolism of the body and are the roots of many genetic diseases To perform genetic manipulation you must first find the gene you want to duplicate or eliminate Sounds simple This process has been compared to finding the proverbial needle in the haystack However in this case the haystack is about the size of the United States Genes are located within cells Cells are found on tiny structures called chromosomes Every chromosome contains one molecule of a chemical substance called DNA One single molecule of DNA can contain thousands of genes When you put all this together this mass of genes cells and chromosomes are known as the human genome A persons DNA contains the information that determines all your properties or hereditary traits To isolate a gene scientists use a technique called gene splicing Simply put gene splicing is when two isolated genes from two different or from the same DNA fragment are spliced together to form another DNA molecule The hybrid molecule formed is called recombinant DNA The recombinant DNA is then inserted back into the cell It will be able to replicate within the cell as the cell divides There are virtually hundreds of purposes for performing genetic engineering Some of the most talked about purposes include repairing a genetic defect to enhance an effect already natural to that organism eg increasing growth rate to increase resistance to disease or external damage eg drought cold
