Properties of Fireworks In America there is nothing greater than celebrating an American holiday by blowing up a small part of it Many people do this using fireworks Is there nothing more exciting than watching a sparkling aerial repeating light up the sky Not only are fireworks a good source of dangerous entertainment they are a good source of chemistry because each firework is filled with elements and compounds that make it do many different things Fireworks are made up of many different chemicals to make them have different colors or to make them do different things Fireworks are made up of compounds and elements usually a reactive metal and an oxide such as potassium oxide Aluminum Al is very common metal in pyrotechnics and is used either with a coating on it Magnesium Mg is a highly reactive flammable metal and is used to brighten flames but it is also used in theatrical flash powder in strobe formulations in flares and in composite rocket propellants Sheperd Potassium K is used a lot in fireworks because it is very reactive and is found in many compounds used in fireworks Potassium Benzoate C6H5 CO OK is used in whistles and burst compositions Potassium Dichromate K2Cr2O7 is an orange surface treatment to stop corrosion and as a catalyst to help the break down of other compounds in fireworks Sodium Nitrate NaNO3 is used to make fireworks appear yellow And Calcium Carbonate CaCO3 is used to make fireworks appear red There are many types of fireworks sold today like aerial repeaters firecrackers and rockets An aerial repeater is a device that propels multiple repetitive pyrotechnic charges into the air The charges produce various colors noises and effects some break into color bursts in the air and some display colors going up Aerial repeaters among the most beautiful show pieces of the consumer fireworks are also called cake or repeaters Bruce Firecrackers are small paper cylinders usually
