The Rapture of Canaan is a story about a little girl Ninah is a 14 year old girl who lives in a small community in the south This community is more like a cult The church of fire and Brimstone Nina has to chose between what she is taught at church and what she thinks is right At the Church of Fire and Brimstone nearly every pleasure is forbidden and every action takes place under close scrutiny Ninahs Grandfather Herman is the founder and preacher of the Church of Fire and Brimstone Herman dominates this cult enforcing ridged behavioral laws and giving out harsh punishments He has even revised the ten commandments to his own liking Herman believes he has struck an existence where the only thoughts are of preparing for Gods rapidly approaching Rapture or judgment day Ninah fears her Grandpa but is very close to her grandmother The grandmother is the nice one The grandmother contradicts the grandfather which made Ninah start doubting his teaching and to start to look at things differently She starts to question the structure of her life Ninah falls in love with James Which at first seemed that the community would not expect The Grandmother finds out that they are in love So she tells the grandfather and he decides to make them prayer partners At first this worked they prayed together but then slowly they went from praying to touching hands then they both wanted each other so they use Jesus as an excuse to start having sex They both are lying to one another when they say we are loving Jesus and they now it but never confess to each other till the Ninah gets pregnant Ninah gets pregnant and tells James He cant handle living with the shame and fearing what the cult would do to him so he took the easy way out and killed himself Ninah has now shame
