The real action came on Feb 18 1951 when City College players Ed Warner Ed Roman and Al Roth were arrested on charges of bribery in Penn Station New York They were returning home from Philadelphia where City beat Temple 95-71 The arrests of the three City College players on that February evening were the initial tremor of the earthquake of scandal that hit college basketball Eventually District Attorney Frank Hogan arrested 32 players from seven colleges who fixed 86 games between 1947 and 1950 On Feb 18 1951 City College LIU and Kentucky all shared in the spotlight but probably not in the way they would have liked to All three colleges appeared on the first page of the New York Times on February 18 1951 regarding the gambling scandals Also in 1951 referee Sol Levy an accomplice of former LIU player Eddie Gard was suspended for arranging the outcome on fixing six NBA games in 1950 There was no provision in the revised New York State Law of 1945 for referees This law was changed in 1951 As the 51-52 season commenced Kentucky was primed to have perhaps their most powerful team of all-time even more potent than the Fabulous Five Future Hall of Famers Cliff Hagan and Frank Ramsey were the cornerstones of a very talented squad Bill Spivey was in his senior season and hoped to demonstrate he was the most dominant center in the college game He had to recover from knee surgery and that delayed his season Eventually point shaving allegations surfaced concerning him and he decided to sit out until he could clear his name He claimed under oath that he was innocent of dumping games stating that he had been approached twice but refused He did however admit to not reporting the incidents Jim Line and Walter Hirsch testified that Spivey was a willing participant This point of contention led to an indictment of Spivey for
