An Analysis of the Impact of Deinstitutionalization on the Upsurge of Homelessness in America

This is an essay about deinstitutionalization. The term was first popularized in the 1950s to 70s and was an experiment involving the release of over 800,000 mental patients. Reducing mental hospitals and giving patients their freedom was appealing to liberals. It was also liked by conservatives who wanted to save money by cutting the mental health budget. The question that arose from doing this was the upsurge of homelessness. There are not enough supports in place, such as housing options, access to psychoactive medication, counseling, community health centers, and financial support to ensure that mentally ill people can function in society independently.
