In the story The Rich Brother Tabias Wolff interrelates the themewith the two brothers Pete and Donald He presents the idea that havingmoney like the eldest brother Pete can often lead to a selfish andcorrupt lifestyle Through both the rich brother and the poor brother wecan see how each is defined by the money they haveThe older brother Pete is the character Wolff uses to demonstrate howmoney can destroy a person and lead to them becoming self-absorbed Peteworks and is successful in the sense that he has money but the moneyultimately has gone to his head Donald accidentally spills a drink inPetes new car and gets it on the seats Pete yells at Donald saying Ijust wish you would be more careful These seats are made of leatherThats stain wont come out Although it was an accident Pete getsmad because his car is new and expensive This shows how a smallaccident causes Pete to over react because his money and possessions arethe items he worships and revolves around Pete is so consumed by awealthy lifestyle that he often dreams about sex and money butmostly money A nightmare is when he dreams that he doesnt have any Wolff 617 Even when unconscious money is running through his mind Heworked hard and made a lot of money but not any more than he thoughthe deserved 613We see how Pete is a slave to money and how itintervenes with who he is as a person How Pete treats others alsoreflects and gives an insight as to how absorbed and shallow he is Astranger asks for a ride to go see his sick daughter because thebrothers are headed the same direction he is needing to go Donalddoesnt hesitate to say that there is plenty of room Then Pete pitchesin saying that they dont have that much room 619 This shows howeven though the stranger would not be inconveniencing him he would sayor do anything just to avoid dealing
