August Wilsons Woman Upon the belief that Rose Maxson was caught up in the idea that mothers should lead lives of sacrifice has become the norm is consistent yet not limited to the African American community but in all communities as a hole otherwise stated by Barbara Christian who criticized the play saying that it was sexist toward African American woman Rose for the times I think showed more than being a simple housewife and mother She went into a relationship with her husband Troy who has a child from a previous marriage and although her bond wasnt as tight as it would be with her son Corey She still shows sincere motherly qualities toward Lyons her stepson Rose also shows strength in ways such as when Lyons comes asking his father for ten dollars and troy refuses Rose is the one who intervenes and gets Lyons the money from him I will just as soon turn it loose she says Wilson 215 This along with having the control of the family budget and actually giving Troy an allowance from the money he makes for the family makes her in my opinion an independent thinker of sorts These examples could be classified as almost typical or simplistic but are not bound to the African American Communities by any means Furthermore Rose shows remarkable emotional strength by accepting her husbands infidelity by not only staying with him but to raise the mistresses child as her own telling Troy From right nowthis child got a mother but you a womanless man ctd in Elam 279 I dont see how feminist critics can view this as sexist The way Wilson portrayed Rose is the way life was in that time period for most cultures Granted African Americans did have a harder time because of obvious American historical events but Barbara Christian criticized the play depicting a focus on the views of blacks
