Humans in our modern day world are often frowned upon if they containone of the following a visible disease or an unusual look In thebook the Samurais Garden by Gail Tsukiyama this also seems to be thecase even though the book has a setting from over 50 years ago TheSamurais Garden by Gail Tsukiyama tells a story that revolves aroundthree main characters Stephen a 17 year old boy Matsu a housekeeperfor Stephens family and Sachi one of Matsus best friends who turnsout be a leper Though Stephen is the main character in the story thecharacter that most helps Sachi overcome her emotional solitude isMatsu Throughout the novel Tsukiyama shows how disease forces acharacter into isolation however Matsu leads her out of her seclusionby the end of the novelEven though Sachi does not feel too isolated at the end of the novelthose views were quite the opposite at the beginning I cried out ofa deep loneliness for my past life and because it was all I hadleft Sachi says while describing her feelings her first night atYamaguchi Tsukiyama 143 The first time that she visited Yamaguchi amountainous village she was sent to because of her leprosy Sachi hadthoughts of suicide and a lack of camaraderie between her fellow lepersfeeling isolated because she lacked her old friends Some of herloneliness is even attributed to the fact that the world revolvedaround me and since she cannot make friendships in Yamaguchi shefeels isolated from her former friends in Tarumi Tsukiyama 143 Sheclearly was not pleased that she would have to live with the lepers forthe rest of her life mainly because of the loneliness that she felttowards her life before leprosy Even though Sachi is displeased with the prospect of staying inYamaguchi for the rest of her life Matsu who develops a strongfriendship with her helps lead her out of her social isolation by theend of the novel Because of his help Sachi is able to accept thelepers
