A Pair of Silk Stockings In the short story A Pair of Silk Stockings by Kate Chopin a young mother comes into possession of fifteen dollars rsSommers at first thinks she should spend the money on her children but her priorities change after she feels a pair of silk stockings MrsSommers changes from a self-sacrificing provider for her family to a person out of touch with reality MrsSommers would give up things that she wanted in order to provide the best for her children she lost sleep and forgot lunch when she was preparing for the big shopping day For example the night before MrsSommers went shopping she stayed up all night planning how to spend the money But it was during the still hours of the night when she lay awake revolving plans in her mind that she seemed to see her way apply towards proper and judicious use of the money This shows that she was overly concerned about how the money was spent This also shows that she could not stop thinking about how she could spend the money In addition MrsSommers mind was so worried about what to buy that she completely forgot about lunch between getting the children fed and the place righted and preparing herself for the shopping bout she had actually forgotten to eat any luncheon at all This shows that she was in such a hurry to get shopping that she forgot about anything else This also shows how MrsSommers was willing to sacrifice in order to get the best for her family In conclusion MrsSommers was an excellent mother but soon all that would change Although MrsSommers was an excellent mother she lost touch with reality once she touched a pair of silk stockings For example MrsSommers saw the silk stockings as a incredibly valuable item She smiled just as if she had been asked to inspect a tiara of diamonds with the ultimate view
