Daniel Lopez 71800 English Lord of the Flies thesis B-10 Mrs Stocks Acts of brutality are strewn about the novel Lord of the Flies Some examples of violent nature and malice found in William Goldings literature are 1 When given the choice of assuming any responsibility on the island Jack chooses he and his choir to be hunters 2 When hunting they choose a pregnant female pig and pierce it repeatedly before it dies 3 Out of three deaths on the island two of them were not accidental Why do the boys act so hostile It is because as human beings they and the rest of their race have a natural penchant for brutality In a normal civilized society we are taught to suppress this tendency It is only when we are allowed to act in an uncivilized society where we lack consequences that this inner nature surfaces The first time this becomes evident is at the first assembly Ralph is elected leader In order to make a compensation for Jack Ralph allows Jack to assume whichever task he wishes he and his choir to take care of Because The choir belongs to Jack of course So Ralph tells him Jacks in charge of the choir They can be-what do you want them to be Jacks answer comes loud and clear without hesitation Hunters He could have chosen any task he wanted Building shelters maintaining a signal fire foraging for fruit and vegetables you name it But he didnt In his mind the only option was hunting He wanted action He wanted to see gore He wanted to kill The next major passage that can be used as an example of Brutality is on one of the hunts After converging on a conclave of pigs they select a sow as their target Instead of taking one life they decide to take the life of the sow
