The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers is the story of outcasts living in a small town and how their fates cross It documents the lives of Mick Kelly Biff Brannon Dr Copeland Jake Blount and most important John Singer and incorporates three very important themes that are thought-provoking and touching Through the characters which are explored to their very depths and the text written with style and passion Carson McCullers subtly suggests three outstanding points that repeat themselves over and over in the book First of all all the characters in the book deal with feelings of isolation because of personal and societal reasons and turn to one person John Singer for help with their emotional weaknesses thinking that he is the one person who understands them This leads to another point which is that each character feels a dire need to establish a god for themselves even if it is not a quintessential god that they are searching for All the lost souls in the novel feel that they must have a central figure to turn to in the time of need and by trusting in Singer they feel as if one part of them is complete Finally the third theme McCullers emphasizes is the true and unquestionable love that human beings feel and she conveys this very important theme through the respect and love the interlocking relationships of the characters share Therefore The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers expresses three significant themes through the events that take place and how the characters react to them Being on the edge of society and the difficulties that come with this is a major theme in a few of McCullers books but in this particular novel she makes use of the interesting and antisocial characters she conjures up Mick Kelly one of most important characters in the book was a twelve year old girl who was too tall for her
