In the process of writing the many short stories and novels JD Salinger used many strategies and literary devices to write his works and they remain pretty consistent throughout his writings Some of the more popular methods to convey thoughts and ideas in a literary work is the use of symbols In the novel Catcher in the Rye some of the most evident forms of symbolism were his usage of the title and Holdens red hunting hat The titles interpretation could have had a literal spin on it how he literally dreams of standing on theedgeof some crazy cliff What I have to do I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere andcatchthem Rye 173 Holdens narrow perception and how the author views childrens interpretation of the world The children symbolize Holdens innocence and he is desperately trying to save himself from falling off this ledge which leads to his maturity and adulthood Holden already perceives adults as phonies and he doesnt want to grow up because he feels he will lose that special characteristic of innocence and honesty that only children have Holdens red hunting hat also symbolizes individuality and his desire to avoid unnecessary social contact A hat that is so unique that it sets him apart from the rest of society The other method Salinger goes about explaining significances in his works is his use of words and their structure Salingers grammatical usage emphasizes how out of place Holden feels compared to the rest of the world because he thinks no one can relate to him and he has to constantly reassure himself that others would do the same thing if they were in his position Salinger also gives Holden a disposition where he sometimes doesnt feel he has the right words to describe his mindset
