The End of Time Many authors use frequent references to time within their work For the audience this helps organize thoughts and events into a coherent sequence The suggestion of time can also be an explanation for or an aid in describing a feeling thought or event TS Eliot uses many strong references to time throughout his work However it is not these references alone but what he says about time that becomes an underlying theme throughout several of his pieces of writing Within his poems TS Eliot shows a dramatic preoccupation with death or running out of time This is especially evident in the poem The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock In the poem The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock TS Eliot suggests discomfort with the idea of death an event that signals the end of ones time living Often within The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock he questions the value of his life and the worth of his time spent living it The lines I have seen the moment of my greatness flickerAnd I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat and snickerAnd in short I was afraid boldly illustrate TS Eliots fear of death 3 In this portion of his poem the eternal Footman is used as a synonym for Death as an entity and states TS Eliots fear very blatantly 3 Another good example of his careful ruminations about the value of his time is when TS Eliot writes And would it have been worth it after allWould it have been worth while 4 These lines are repeated several times throughout The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock for emphasis of this discomfort and to cause the reader to likewise question the worth of his or her own life Indeed the importance of this poem seems to lie in forcing the same questions that TS Eliot suffers upon the reader as well TS Eliot also contemplates the
