The Timber Wolf an elegant long-legged creature once inhabited the vast forests of New England a century ago Now there is hope of bringing this magnificent creature back to its former environment Reintroducing the timber wolf would not only help the species with its recovery process but would also balance New Englands ecosystem and bring back the very symbol of wilderness The addition of wolves will bring an ecological rebirth by restoring the top line predator Hunters arent a substitute for natural predators because they take trophy animals whereas wolves are less selective Miss informed people believe that we should not be introducing wolves since we already have coyotes however in Yellowstone Park where gray wolves have been relocated they are known to drive coyotes away or even kill them This makes rodents more available to smaller predators such as owls pine martens and badgers The remains of wolves will also support a wide variety of animals including ravens foxes mice bald eagles and even bears In addition the wolves keep their bivorous prey in check which does not allow over population They can consume 20 pounds in a single meal thats like a 200 pound human consuming a 40-pound meal This cascading effect ripples throughout the ecosystem restoring natural distribution and abundance of plants mammals birds and insects and preserving native biodiversity By bringing wolves back to New England we have this rare opportunity to not only right a blatant ecological wrong but also a moral wrong I think the question we have to ask ourselves is Do we have the generosity of spirit to allow the wolves to return I think it is our ethical responsibility to restore the animals we eliminated To admit to mistakes is the first step to not repeat them Many people were frightened of wolves and as a result wolves were ruthlessly hunted down and slaughtered a century ago however there is no evidence anyone was ever attacked
