About a boy Starring Hugh Grant Toni Collette Rachel Weisz Nicholas Hault Directors Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz About a Boy is written and directed by Paul and Chris Weitz the directors of American Pie The producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are the men responsible for Bridget Joness Diary and it is based on Nick Hornbys best selling novel About a Boy Using a solid plot and good choice of actors About a Boy provides an enjoyable 100 minutes The novelist Nick Hornby seemingly wrote the Will Freeman Character with Hugh Grant in mind The characters in this film are likeable the plot is straightforward and there is a fairly consistent sense of humour Hugh Grant plays Will Freeman a 38 year old boy who has never worked in his life and he is proud of having not done much of anything and is in no hurry to settle down he is not interested in a serious relationship Will refers to himself as an island He divides his days into units Watching TV buying records exercising He wants nothing more than meaningless sex and he finds out that the best way to this is by dating needy divorced single women with a child Delighted with his new discovery Will joins a divorcee help group But then a tragic event inhabits his island for good with Marcus a 12 year old boy who decides that will might be the perfect man for his emotionally disturbed clueless hippie suicidal mother Fiona Toni Collette There is nothing original about this movie as its a typical older man meets younger boy and they both teach each other about life lessons The movie focuses more on Will and slightly less on Marcus so instead of a deeper look at arguably deeper characters you get Grant as Will and unfortunately this makes it hard to get to know Fiona and other minor characters
