Francis Scott Key was born in Frederick County now known as Carroll County Maryland on August 1st of 1779 He was born into a family established in Maryland and grew up on the family estate of Terra Rubra There in his hometown he attended grammar school and then went on to St Johns College in Annapolis Key graduated college at 17 years old in 1796 By 1805 Key had began to practice law in Georgetown Maryland By 1814 he had appeared many times before the US Supreme Court Francis Scott Key married Mary and made a home in Georgetown just west of where the Key Bridge crosses the Potomac River Key and his wife lived in the house on M Street from 1803 to 1833 where they raised six sons and five daughters The house now stands as a memorial park Key served in the Georgetown Light Field Artillery from 1813-1814 Although he was opposed to war Key was a very religious man and was involved in the Episcopal Church and felt he owed it to his community During the Battle of Bladensburg he assigned field positions to American troops a duty he had no expertise in During this war Keys friend Dr William Beanes was taken prisoner by the British army soon after its departure from Washington Key left Baltimore to obtain the services of Colonel John Skinner the governments prisoner of war exchange agent Skinner and Key sailed on a truce ship down the bay and met the British Fleet Successfully and cleverly Key negotiated Dr Beanes release
