In the book Duddy Kravitz Duddy is a young Jewish boy that demonstrates the way a young Jewish man is expected to act according to stereotypes handed down over the years Jewish people are assumed to be a people that show personality traits such as lying cheating and stinginess The author has portrayed many examples of Jewish characteristics in Duddy to make him the Perfect Jew He is found in many instances expressing these typical Jewish stereotypes In the novel Duddy is a person who appears to have no problem lying to someone in order to allow himself to prosper in some manner He uses these tactics during his high school years in his many job ventures and even with his close friends The first instance in which this is shown is to Mr MacPherson While Mr MacPherson was Duddys teacher Duddy constantly tormented him and played cruel pranks on him One example was when Mr MacPherson was out of the classroom and someone drew a picture mocking him When he confronted Duddy on this Duddy refused to point out the culprit Mr MacPherson knew that it was Duddy and he was disappointed with him and his actions Mr MacPherson shows this when he tells Duddy I know youre responsible for the drawing on the board and I think it cowardly of you not to have taken complete responsibility P10 This shows that Duddy did not want to get in trouble for what he did and therefore lied to keep himself from getting the blame Another example of when Duddy lied was when he was running his movie production company When he was talking to Mr Cohen he tried to convince him to have a movie made about his sons bar-mitzvah Mr Cohen finally agreed to have a movie taken of his sons bar-mitzvah for twelve-hundred dollars
