Im dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow Im dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white Just reading those words brings Christmas images to mind doesnt it A fire flickering on the hearth the twinkle of lights on the tree the aroma of sugar cookies coming out of the oven the once-a-year taste of wassail The Jewish composer Irving Berlin was on target wasnt he Its the white in Christmas that evokes so many seasonal memories Having experienced Christmas in the snow-covered Switzerland as well as in the hot and burning Albania I can tell you that doing your Christmas shopping in shorts and air-conditioning just isnt the same as tromping through the snow to find that last gift There are many reasons why I miss the snow when it is not there at Christmas Snow evokes so many images that speak of the true meaning of the Christmas season Consider its purity There is something about a baby in a manger that echoes the purity of newly fallen snow Theres also the silence of snow--it falls thousands of feet and lands without a sound Christmas is a time to block out the noise of the world for at least a day And finally theres the uniqueness of snow The truth is its just not Christmas without snow You dont need a lot It doesnt even need to snow where you live just close by enough so you can go see it Its the icing on the cake the frame around the picture the flowers in the vaseWhether I experience a white
