Food we all need it and yet so many of us go without it The reasons we all know drought famine flooding and just not having enough economic resources either as a state or individual to buy food Populations have risen at a greater rate then which the farmers of that country can provide for them Unfortunately advances in things such as fertilisers and pesticides have not been enough and in some cases not helpful at all as many poor countries can not afford them There seems now though an obvious solution to this problem GM foods have been used in America for many years yields have improved greatly without seemingly having caused serious side-effects on the population Unfortunately despite the amount of surplus food produced by American farmers yes America does produce more than it eats American food aid is often rejected by African Governments such as Uganda due to the GM nature of the food The explanation for this seemingly bizarre situation is Europe The European Community does not import GM food as it has concerns over its environmental and health effects The European Consumer of course has his right to buy whichever goods he obtains maximum utility from Unfortunately this affects the African farmer immensely Due to Europe not importing GM food the food aid which is planted in Africa becomes contaminated with the regular crop so that all the food production becomes GM As most of African food exports are to Europe in the first place this scenario could be disastrous in the long run The question of the safety of GM food though is ultimately a question of science which will require continuing scientific research There is a simpler way though to reduce the poverty and plight of not just African farmers but those in developing countrys the world over The answer is for the EU to abolish its Common Agricultural
