Guards and Prisoners Why is it that prisoners while imprisoned and after their release desperately seek power and chose any means of getting it The answer to that question lies in the article Study of Prisoners and Guards in a Simulated Prison The atmosphere of a prison creates enormous hatred of the guards who are violent and sadistic to the prisoners To find out why such distinctive roles of prisoner and guard were assumed a facility was built to simulate a prison Participants who freely volunteered to participate were randomly divided into two groups prisoners and guards The prisoners were told that they would be notified when their services would be needed and promised monetary compensation for their participation The guards were told their basic responsibilities and that physical harm was not allowed The prisoners were arrested and admitted into the prison as a real prisoner would ID numbers were issued as names stocking caps were given to hide the distinctiveness of hair styles identical and baggy clothes were given A healthy individual is one who has unique qualities which distinguish himher from others The process of admission into the prison proved to de-individualize the prisoners thus making them feel inferior to the guards and experience the loss of power The guards in uniforms with whistles and wooden batons received a heightened sense of power As the experiment proceeded the prisoners expressed tendencies of inflicting harm to others more frequently Despite the fact that prisoners and guards were free to engage in any kind of interaction they only expressed anger and disrespect towards each other Due to the extreme depressive conditions of some prisoners the experiment was untimely terminated Feeling the need to exert as much power over the prisoners as could be allowed some guards went beyond their required responsibilities when they thought that no one was watching It was concluded that the loss of personal identity of the prisoners had a traumatic
