A hot button topic in the sport of MMA right now is when is the right time for a referee to step in and stop a fight It seems as though the fans get mad when a fight is stopped too soon and they complain when a referee lets the fight go too long and a fighter takes unnecessary punches The rule the judges are supposed to follow is the fight needs to be stopped if a fighter cant intelligently defend themselves So when is the right time for a referee to step in and stop itBefore I share my opinion on this let me say that I fully understand the referees are under a lot of presser to make the right call and the decision to stop a fight or not happens in a split second Making a decision like that is a very hard thing to do and I personally would never want to be in that spot Dana White is on record saying Id take stop too early every time I understand why he would say that because they are his fighters and the safety of the fighters is extremely important I feel the opposite In the majority of the situations where people have problems with a stoppage the fighter wasnt in any intense danger With all that said I think there is a clear distinction as to when a fight should be stopped and when a fight shouldnt be If a fighter is face down on the mat or lying flat on their back the fight should absolutely be stopped There is no chance of a fighter to intelligently defend themselves in that situation Some examples of that would be Dan Hendersons TKO win over Fedor Anthony Johnsons KO win over Charlie Brenneman and Junior dos Santos KO win over Cain Velazquez In all those
