Dear Senate Council or to whom it may concern During Halloween season My Professor decided that he would have a dress up day for his students The assignment was to dress up as your favorite or maybe well-known figure in political history I decided to dress as Angela Davis well known for her actions in the Black Panther Party during the Sixties and my friend decided to dress as Sojourner Truth Many people dressed as many different well-known and not so well known figures My friend and I thought we had chosen people that renowned for their efforts in the Abolition of Slavery and The Civil Rights Movement However we were proven drastically wrong When we stood proudly to announce whom we dressed as we were greeted with blank expressions and silent stares No one in the entire class Except for my friend the professor and I knew the people we tried to represent however during a normal class period the professor would ask us to identify people who played an insignificant part in history by comparison standards and at least five people would raise their hand That day I was truly saddened by my counterparts lack of knowledge of their history The ignorance did not stop there Through out the rest of the day I made it a mission to ask everyone who Sojourner Truth was and what did she do Despondently no one knew white or black who she was and often confused her achievements to those of Miss Harriet Tubman It was at that point that I realized that it was no just the apathy of my counterparts that allowed them to lack knowledge of black history it also had to be the Kentucky school systems The reason why I stated Kentucky specifically was because everyone I asked received his or her primary education in this state Of the people that I asked that were not from here four of
