Teenage Depression and Suicide Teenagers are very susceptible to emotional distress or depression Many teenagers are faced with much adversity that they sometimes find very difficult to handle Unfortunately there are some teens who find that suicide is the answer to their problems Many people believe that depression is just a phase that teens go through They do not acknowledge the seriousness of teenage depression and they overlook the terrible things that can happen as a result The typical misconception that parents have is that their kids would never commit suicide The thought of it never crosses their mind until it actually happens And then they seem so surprised Depression can be a result of many different things Kathleen McCoy in her book Coping With Teenage Depression A Parents Guide gives examples of things that can cause depression Like the death of a loved one separation from a loved one loss of a familiar way of being loss of self esteem or failure in achieving certain goals 18 It is said to be a psychopathic disorder which is not uncommon and is very serious when not dealt with as soon as possible There are many signs that could appear when a person is suffering from depression These signs include sadness inactivity self-depreciation decrease in energy fatigue loss of appetite loss of weight irritability not talkative and a loss of interest in things that were previously enjoyed These are common signs of depression but they do not always have to do with depression That is one of the reasons teenagers who are suffering from depression go unnoticed
