In the novel The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway a reader isforced to decide weather the spite that the Jake has for Chonoriginates from Jakes racist background or his deeply seededjealousy of Chon for having a brief affair with Brett Even though itis clear that Jake has racist views the hatred he has for his formerfriend Chon Chon is strictly based on the jealousy he feels towardsChon for the weekend he spent with BrettJake goes in to great detail about Chons early life He speakshighly and admiringly of Chon but in a condescending way A readerget her first hint on page one that Jake has some racist feelingstoward Chon He speaks of how Chons nose was flattened in a boxingmatch and concluded the sentence with and it certainly improvedhis nose 11 This can be taken as a reference to the stereotypicalJew nose that is often associated with Jewish people Jake and Chonare close friends and Jake likes him up to the point where he becomesinvolved with Brett Jake goes on and on about all of therelationship mistakes in Chons life There is an hint of jealousythat appears in Jakes tone He states that women began to becomeattracted to Chon as he got older and that it changed him so thathe was not so pleasant to have around 16 There is racism inJakes tone but Jakes problem with Chon is is strictly one ofjealousyBy this time Jake has already developed an extreme distaste forChons endeavors with women but these feelings their peak when Chonand Lady Brett have a brief affair Jake having unconditional lovefor Brett blames the entire incident on Chon In turn Chon makes aspoint to rub it in Jakes face Jake says it was giving himpleasure to be able to talk with the understanding that I knew therewas something between them 106 Jake has a great deal of troubledealing with this It has nothing to do with the fact that Chon isJewish Jake
